August 2012

August was pretty much a blur.  Not quite sure why, but the days all ran together and before I knew it, it was over.  So, here is August in a nutshell.

We crossed a few more things off our Summer to-do list, including a few science experiments.  The boys loved the naked egg experiment.

A picnic in the park.

Bowling at Pinz.  Charlie started off strong, but mom walked away with the win.

And the fair.  It was smokey and hot, but the boys loved it.  The ticket lady exaggerated on how many rides Cannon would actually be able to ride because of his height, but for the most part he was pretty understanding when he had to sit out on some of them.  We had pronto pups and strawberry shortcake.  We  enjoyed the animals and petting zoo.  We avoided the carnie games like the plague. It was all the fair is supposed to be.

We also played at the splash park.  Cannon was cautious at first but then he had no problem jumping in.  Just don't splash him because you will definitely hear about it.

We celebrated 13 years of wedded bliss. Awe.

We had donut dates with cute boys.

We bought school supplies for a certain second grader.

And that second grader started school.

We also had special treats to celebrate the first day of school.  Charlie can't get enough Kinder chocolate. It is probably his second favorite thing, after Nutella, of course.

Whew!  August, you were a busy one.

We had a great summer.  Definitely one of the best for sure.

I usually never let the boys get chocolate milk when we eat out, but since it was just Cannon and I for dinner tonight, I decided it would be a fun treat.  He was busy looking at the toy display, but from several feet away he heard me order the chocolate milk and he came running.  "Did you say chocolate milk?!?" he yelled with a huge smile on his face.

The cashier put our order together as Cannon stood by the counter saying, "One chocolate milk for me please.  That's right, I will take one chocolate milk.  Yep, that chocolate milk is for me."

The smile remained as we found our seat, shook up the milk container and unwrapped the straw.  He sucked down the entire bottle, barely taking enough time to breathe as he guzzled it down (despite my requests to take it easy).

Then he took two bites of his chicken and said "My belly is full."

Now I remember why I never get them chocolate milk.  Lesson learned, once again.

This weekend we......

Made huge playdoh messes.

Swept the kitchen floor 82 times. Okay maybe just 4 times, but isn't that a lot in 2 days?

Played at the park.

Got to World 7 in Super Mario Bros.

Watched grass grow.

Made summer vacation plans.

Did lots of laundry.  There wasn't one dirty sock in this house for at least 6 hours.

Picked out a ceiling fan for our bedroom.

Blew up some peeps in the microwave.

Got some frozen yogurt at the new yogurt shop in town.  Cake batter flavored frozen yogurt is awesome.

It was good weekend indeed.

Charlie discovered the thrill of Ebay today as he bid on a Gameboy SP that he wants for this "Retro Gaming Collection".  He had his eye on one at our local video game store but it turned out they couldn't sell it because they didn't have the charger for it.  We had a very disappointed boy after that visit.  So we told him we would look on ebay when we got home.  He got out his money and we talked about shipping charges and what he could afford and then the bidding began.  He missed out on the first few auctions, but he finally snagged a good one!  He loved every minute of it.  Now the wait begins for it to arrive in the mail and it is just killing him.  It is starting to kill me a little too because we have to hear about it nonstop, but enjoying his excitement makes it all worth it I suppose.  Good thing I didn't give him my password though, because I think we may have an ebay addict in the making.

Our Cannon and Mommy day got cut short today because I got called in to work.  Boo!  But first, we did do a little grocery shopping.  Cannon insists on pushing the cart around the store.  He doesn't think he needs any assistance, but I think the rest of the shoppers will beg to differ!  We have been doing our best to eat healthy in the Smith household (besides the bacon of the month club of course).  It has been good.

And even though I really wanted to say no to my boss, I decided I better not.  So I had to say goodbye to Mr. Cannon.  I love that we get to have these Mondays together though.  He is growing up so stinkin' fast.

Beautiful spring-like temperatures this weekend called for a walk to the park.  The boys love the playground in our new neighborhood.  I have a feeling we will be spending a lot of time here this summer.

Pillows, blankets, pajamas and popcorn.  Yep, it must be movie night.

My lunch of choice:  a ham and swiss with light mayo and a diet coke.  Sounds pretty perfect to me.

Cannon still is not really into watching much TV, but lately he has developed a little crush on Dora.  On the rare occasion he does slow down enough to watch a show, the request is always for Dora the Explorer.  And it is so very cute to hear him yelling at the TV from the other room, "Swiper no swiping! Swiper no swiping!"

I am not too crazy about my commute, but I am trying to focus on the best thing it has to offer:  30 minutes of sweet, golden silence in the car.  No complaining about who is looking at who wrong.  No "I'm bored."  No toys flying through the air.  Hmm.  Maybe my commute isn't so bad after all.

Playing video games at Best Buy always seems to be more fun than playing at home.

Our Friday night tradition:  Chinese takeout and a movie.  Sounds like the perfect start to the weekend to me.

around the house....

Cannon has an incisor coming in as well as 2 molars that are still breaking through. He is pretty sure that he is dying. We now know that he can and will cry for 4 hours straight. I do feel bad for him, but I really miss sleep.

The nice thing about doing the laundry in the summer (if there is one) is not having to track down all the baby/kid socks.

We decided it was time to try to put Cannon in church nursery this week since he did so good with the grandparents. The drop off went fine and they never called our number so we thought it had gone well, but he looked pretty pathetic when we went to pick him up. The sweet lady that was taking care of him said he had been quite sad. He had been crying off and on and kept hanging out by the door looking for us. Hopefully next week will be better. Charlie on the other hand loves this church and had a great time.

For the last few months every time I have taken a shower Cannon would sit outside the bathroom and cry. I used to let him come in the bathroom with me, but then he would try to climb in with all his clothes on. Last week he suddenly stopped doing this and I am happy to be showering in peace.

Eric made one request for dinner last week and that was meatloaf. I had it all prepared and opened the oven door to stick it in. I hit the edge of the pan on the door and it fell upside down in the oven getting the raw meatloaf everywhere. It could not be salvaged so we had McDonald's instead. He definitely did not marry me for my cooking.

I have been enjoying the scent of Havana Cabana in my scentsy. Makes me wish I was relaxing on the beach with an ice cold diet coke and a magazine.

The other night Eric had made an exaggeration about something and Charlie said "Easy there, dad". It is obvious that he has spent some time with G-Pa lately.

If you say I love you to Cannon he will immediately give you a kiss. The other night I said to him "who is ready to get on his pjs?" and to my surprise he squealed "Me!"

Charlie is completely obsessed with what Lego set he should ask for from Santa. He goes back and forth between the Spongebob House set and the Police HQ set. He is constantly talking about it and changing his mind. We have been trying to tell him that Christmas is still pretty far away and that they may come out with some other sets by then that he will want instead, but he is not hearing of it.

I have been getting some scrapbooking done but the above mentioned lack of sleep has been hindering my creativity.

Charlie has been trying his best to be a good big brother. They have been fighting so much lately that I had to sit down and have a talk with him. It is hard for him to understand that Cannon is still a baby and we cannot expect him to do all the things Charlie can do. He has been trying though and when he does something nice he asks "Am I being a good big brother now?"

And just because any post is boring without a picture, here is the little cutie at In-N-Out a few weeks ago. He loves those hats.

Photobucket

a few random thoughts for today.....

-I did go back to IKEA and get those chair pads. I am sad to say that they didn't fit our chairs very well so I took them back. (have I ever mentioned how awesome it is that IKEA is only 4.5 miles from our apartment?)

-I also got an expedit bookcase for Charlie's room. I was able to get it in the cart but then couldn't get it out of the cart and into my car. How did it get heavier in the 5 minutes it took me to checkout and get to my car? I went back in to see if they could hold it in the furniture pick-up area for a few hours. The employee was less than pleasant and I ended up having to return it. We went back this evening when Eric got home. Much easier with 2 people. It is perfect in Charlie's room. I took some before and after shots of his room that I may share tomorrow...the before was pretty bad so I might chicken out!

- Have I ever admitted on the blog that Cannon is sleeping in our closet? I am definitely embarrassed to admit that, but there it is. His crib fit in there just perfectly and it is working out great. We plan to move him back in to Charlie's room eventually, but I don't think they are ready right now. They are both just very light sleepers and it was a nightmare for everybody before.

- Cannon's toy bin in the living room is located by all my scrapbook albums. He likes to take his smaller toys and shove them into the albums. Then when I pull the albums out all these little toys fall out. I will put the toys away and the next day he puts them all back in the albums. It makes me smile.

- Charlie is a big fan of the show iCarly which is currently the happy meal toy at McDonald's. The catch is that it is the girl's toy. The boy toy is Star Wars. So today when I ordered him a happy meal I requested the iCarly toy. Charlie was standing next to me saying very loudly, "I want the girl toy please!" Luckily he got the magic meatball toy which isn't really girly at all. I probably would have to draw the line at the lipgloss cell phone.

- Cannon climbed up on to the couch by himself yesterday. Now he can't figure out how to do it again and it is making him MAD. He tries and tries and then gets frustrated and screams. He has a temper like nothing else, must have gotten that from Eric. :)

A few pictures from today, just because he is cute. Look at those chubby little fingers and cheeks.
